Let There Be Light

Well, do I really have to say how much I related to this word by Joel Osteen? Anyone else agree? If you are still working and not enjoying retirement as yet, it is a fact that we spend more of our waking hours on the job than at home with our families. And we all know how these hours can quickly expand just like that into extra hours when trying to complete deadline-driven projects.

I think it would be great to have a job where everything simply fit into place like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. We would get to work on time, take our lunch break on time and leave our office on time. We would get adequate notice about projects and be able to complete them on time. Everyone would be friendly, cooperative and committed as well as supportive team players. Best of all our pay would be unbelievably generous! Yup, that would be wonderful but an ideal job is much like an ideal life: it’s not going to happen.

The world is full of dark places and dark people … as Joel suggests, both need our light. Let’s ask God to show us how we can shine even brighter exactly where He has placed us and by extension to transform a few life negatives into positives.  With Him on our side it can be done.

This IS the day … 6 Tips Help You Love Mondays

It’s Monday … again … a day most of us love to hate. Well, hate may be a strong word but I don’t know of many people who like Mondays far less love them.  Most of us want the weekend to last at least one day longer.  We are disappointed with the things we didn’t get to do over the last two days and are depressed over the things we will have to do over the next five.

Personally?  I need a 3-day weekend.  Saturday would be spent running errands, grocery shopping and laundry.  Sunday would be spent going to church, cooking and doing any household chores left over from Saturday.  Monday (my new 3rd day of the weekend) would be MY day, spent doing the things I want to do: like reading a book, watching a movie, writing a poem or short story or blog post … the possibilities are endless.  Of course I’d still want to be paid the same salary if I was yet to retire … but that’s another story for another day.

What I’ve decided to do however is motivate myself (and my fellow Monday discontents) into changing our mindsets towards this first working day of the week.  From this point onwards I am suggesting we start the ball rolling by asking ourselves WHY we dislike Mondays so much.

  • Is it to do with the fact that we have to go back to work after two days away from the office?
  • Or maybe it’s because of those boring weekly staff meetings our executives insist on having at 9:00 a.m.?
  • Could it do with having to leave home extra early to avoid sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic or more likely the 2 hour commute just to make it in on time?

After we find our why, let’s see how best we can adopt a more positive mindset.  Here are 5 initial thoughts plus a bonus but I want to hear any others you may have – because we are all in this together:

  1. Meditate as soon as we wake up on Monday morning; think positive thoughts e.g. Today IS going to be a great day!
  2. Enjoy some upbeat music on the way into the office to put us in a good mood.
  3. Plan to do something totally different e.g. take another route to work if possible, drink tea instead of coffee, do squats instead of push ups during our exercise routine, wear pink instead of black … you get where I’m coming from.
  4. Consciously plan to make our Mondays matter e.g. schedule something exciting on our calendar for Monday (lunch with a friend, a quick trip to the mall, a random anonymous act of kindness for a co-worker or family member).
  5. Write a To Do List which targets getting the ‘yucky’ tasks out of the way first thing on Monday, in order to leave room for the not-so-yucky stuff.
  6. Bonus thought: Count our blessings and thank God for allowing us to see another Monday, because some of us did not make it to today.

So can we do this?  More importantly, can we do this starting today?  Who’s with me? Let’s go out and rejoice and thank God it’s Monday!
