Hug Your Mom – Especially If She’s Still With You

My mom and I 🙂

Happy Mother’s Day!

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John 19:26-27 (NIV)

There’s nothing like being a mother …  and I would know; I’ve been one for the past 19 and a half years.  But where’s my reward for being a dedicated worker?  What about my recognition for overtime or for going above and beyond?  Oh, and let’s not forget all the extra things I did that weren’t on my job description!  If this is a career path when will I ever become CEO instead of a general worker/cleaner/taxi driver/counselor/conflict negotiator and first-aider? Yet, one of my biggest achievements in life is being a mom (wipes tears from eyes before son sees them).

Actually, none of the above matters.  There’s no way a mother can explain in words the feeling she gets from hugging her child as she reads stories in bed, or wrapping them in her arms after a bad day at school, or swatting them on their behind for giving her lip! She laughs when they laugh and she cries when they cry.  Her heart swells with pride in accomplishment and constricts with pain in defeat.

But I digress.  This post today is really to say: Happy Mother’s Day to all mummies and adopted mummies e.g. aunties, god-mummies, older sisters, teachers … you struggled and sacrificed and disciplined because you were committed to helping us realise our potential and we love you the more because of this.

If you have a mom, then celebrate her! Do not do like a friend of mine who always complains that his mother is exceeding the limits of his medication! Noooo!!!

And to all of you who like myself have no mummy to spend the day with them in person, be strong!  She’s looking down on you with love and pride because she knows you are simply awesome!

“Motherhood is a great honor and privilege, yet it is also synonymous with servanthood. Every day women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families. Whether they are awake at night nursing a baby, spending their time and money on less-than-grateful teenagers, or preparing meals, moms continuously put others before themselves.”
~ Charles Stanley

“It is not until you become a mother that your judgment slowly turns to compassion and understanding.”
