Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.” Joshua 6:2-5
Take a moment and really read these verses from Joshua. Then read them again. What a weird instruction! No fighting, no battle, no physical engagement whatsoever; just marching and more marching. Do you know how hard that must have been for brave men used to swinging swords and axes? Many of us may have asked after hearing this word: “Lord, is that really a workable feasible successful strategy? Are you sure you’ve got this right?” Yet Joshua never faltered but stepped out in faith, and as we know the walls of Jericho collapsed – exactly as God had foretold.
Why this story today? Because there are lots of walls around us; I know I have more than a few. We can see big looming walls of debt, health challenges, work issues, not having enough time in a day. The car breaks down, our mom or dad or child falls ill, the boss keeps giving us projects on top of projects. Worse yet, our dreams may be still dreams after a number of years and we wonder if there is any real meaning to this thing called life.
Pause … and remember: God fights our Jericho battles for us. We do not need to curse, fight, protest loudly, throw our hands up in the air in despair or have high blood pressure. If we march out in faith (and admittedly it might be more than seven times or even seven times seven around said walls) blowing our trumpets of praise, then the walls WILL fall. In the meantime, we will ignore the naysayers and the doubters and the people who laugh in our faces because they think we are crazy. We are not crazy. We are simply marching onwards to our sure victory. Do I hear an ‘Amen’?
Walk out in victory dear friends; our God and Father is good 🙂
“When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.” Joshua 6:20
