As Tropical Storm Matthew Comes …

My little island of 166 square miles is being affected right now by Tropical Storm Matthew.

My situation? Heavy heavy rain, howling winds turning my curtains into balloons, and dog resting up on the inside. My washing machine and any container available all filled with water, kettle sitting on the stove with fresh water nicely boiled, lunch/dinner waiting in the oven but here’s hoping everyone else in Barbados (and in the other islands on this storm’s path) will be safe!

PS: We are the first pink landmass outline from the right of the photo, kind of like in the middle of the map – in case international readers are wondering 😐

Have you ever been affected by really bad weather? How did you prepare in advance? What did you do as you waited for everything to pass? Share a note or two in the comments.

  1. I don’t think we get them as often here in the UK

    • Thanks Melinda! So far, heavier rain and louder wind. My son’s dog does not like the male local commentators on TV who are updating us on what is happening, and he is letting me know. Some areas have flooded, a few trees and power lines are down but this system will be affecting us for a while it’s so big.

  3. I lived on Long Island many years ago; we were hit with a hurricane, my husband at the time had already boarded up the windows & tied down everything in sight. He then went to go help out other neighbors to do the same thing. I remember the kids & I got all kinds of pillows & blankets laying them on the floor. We got as comfortable as possible waiting out the storm. It seemed like hours after hours you could hear the wind howling & the trees creaking, snapping & you could hear the branches hitting the wood on the windows. The electric kept going off & on. The kids thought it was funny at times, then would get real quiet as the wind grew stronger at one point they asked if we were going to be all right. I answered yes,we are safe because God was watching over us!!

Hope you & your family is safe!!

  4. I live in New York and the hurricane that hit us hard was Sandy a few years ago. She was not in a good mood when she passed by. 😉 We had no electricity for a few days.
