Crop Over Time in Barbados: One of the Best Feelings Ever :)

It’s Summer-time in our land of sea and sun, and one of the biggest festivals in Barbados will soon culminate in a weekend of fun, revelry and artistic creativity. Like all things in life, the good comes with some bad, but my advice is to take what is positive while discarding what is negative. Yes, some may see this as an opportunity to ‘wuk up’ (gyrate … a lot … like a whole lot) and ‘get on bad’ whether in a fete, on a cruise or while jamming down the road on Kadooment Day BUT that doesn’t lessen the amazingly creative musical talent which exists on this 166 square mile rock (and then of course, how can we forget our very own Rhianna!).

Below is a brief history of the Crop Over Festival thanks to www.barbados.org as well as a sampling of music for your listening pleasure compliments of DJ JEL.

Festival history

The Crop Over summer festival is Barbados’ most popular and colourful festival. Its origins can be traced back to the 1780’s, a time when Barbados was the world’s largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest – the Crop Over celebration. As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940’s the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to create the extravaganza that exists today ….. an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe.
