How Good is Becky’s Hair Really?

So there’s been quite a lot of huffing and puffing about Beyonce’s new album “Lemonade”. I haven’t heard it as yet but I am aware of the comments being made about the reference in one of her songs to “Becky with the Good Hair” (in addition to whether Jay-Z did or did not cheat on her).

As a Caribbean woman I wondered what exactly defined ‘good hair’ … how much kink should my hair have or not have? Is it a percentage, a ratio of kinkiness to non-kinkiness?

But let’s take a quick look at an exceprt from Translating ‘Becky with the Good Hair‘ an article written by Alexis Chateau who notes: “For most Black women, our hair is still a part of that daily struggle – especially in an era where personal appearances mean so much. Our friends of other ethnic groups and mixes can easily throw their hair into a ponytail in five seconds. But our frizzy hair obeys no law and no man.”

This my friend is very very true. My hair is chemically straightened because it’s thicker than thick and I honestly don’t have a lot of time to spend on it … but the frizz is stubborn! It does not like to be controlled. I have used super holding gels, hair sprays, conditioners; people, my frizz is ‘hair’ to stay. It can take me hours to style it with a curling iron, knowing full well that in the end the frizz will still win out but does all of this mean my hair is not good? I mean it’s healthy and strong. I am not going bald. It’s long enough (I suppose) and I can quickly get it into a bun aka it’s 95% almost permanent state … so is that not good?

Well I continue to ponder I invite you to read Alexis’ article in full and then leave a comment with your thoughts. Maybe you never even thought about your hair before “Lemonade” … I didn’t really but I’m thinking that’s all good 🙂

  1. Will watch video soon. I spend a lot of time trying to teach my daughter to appreciate her thick head of hair. I’m always telling her that God made her perfectly and that we are all different and beautiful in our own way.
