Once upon a time, there was a mom …

April 19, 2009 vs. April 19, 2015.

Can’t believe it’s six years already since we lost our mom to pancreatic cancer. We watched as she went from a vibrant super active woman to a tiny withered shell of herself. We listened as her voice became fainter and fainter until she stopped speaking altogether. We fed her with baby food and then a dropper with liquid until she could no longer eat. We smiled with her and held her stiff fingers in our hands until she didn’t know who we were. It was the hardest time of our lives.

Although it is said that time heals all, this offers little comfort because no-one ever tells you exactly how much time is really needed. Even after all this time, it’s as though the pain of her illness and subsequent death happened just yesterday; the memories are that intense. Yet we hold on to the good times: the laughter, the family gatherings, the prayer meetings, the smiles, the hugs and the love.

She will be missed because she is no longer physically with us, but she will live forever in our hearts. RIP mom; we love you!

My mom and I My mom and I

Once upon a time, there was a mom; my mom.  She was beautiful, smart and very hard working.  Under her control and care, one dollar became ten, then twenty, then fifty.  She sewed our clothes, our cushion covers, our curtains.  She cooked meals for her household and for those who had less than we did.  She loved her God and served him diligently in His house.  She willingly shared whatever she had because she knew this act would come back to her in blessings tenfold (if not more). She was a kind soul who left us way too soon.

But now I am a mother too and my job is to pass on everything she taught me to my own child, so that he in turn can pass the baton on to his children.  It’s great to be a mother when you’ve had such a fine example…
