Lord give me a sign (please)!

road humps ahead, life challenges

“Ask the LORD your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” Isaiah 7:11

You are driving along the highway on the way to visit a friend. Directions to her home are sketchy at best. You’re looking for some sort of landmark, anything to show you’re on the right road.  You have an idea of where you’re going … well kind of … you press on. As the sun sets it begins to get dark. Now you’re more than just a little concerned. It’s getting harder to see where you are going. You consider turning back, thinking this journey was a big mistake. That’s when you may even start to pray: “Lord give me a sign.”

Isn’t it like this sometimes when you’re travelling down the road we call life? You start out being sure you’ve heard from God in making a certain decision. You’re on the road to fulfilling your dream but your car breaks down or your bicycle wobbles precariously over rocks and gravel. Things aren’t looking too good. You continue on, but the situation get worse. A medical emergency causes you to divert down a horrible dirt track where you get a flat tire or the chain from the bicycle falls off. As you make it back on to the main road you get into a terrible accident. Your car (or bicycle) is totaled. What do you do now? You’ve been praying and praying and praying. You are barely holding on. Oh, if only God would send you a sign …

Can you relate? Well I certainly can. There are days when I swear God has put me on hold indefinitely or redirected my calls to an answering machine because I hear absolutely nothing from Him, not one single word. I begin to doubt myself, become unsure of whether to turn right or left or just keep going straight. I don’t know what to do. I can’t see a single sign. I want to turn back.

But God does send signs; they may just be a little unusual. Like the post on Facebook which I stumbled upon one night featuring the famous rapper/actor DMX – who apparently felt the same way I did. He wanted a sign from God so badly he even wrote and recorded a song which was kind of good for me because when I need a little inspiration now I turn it up to the max. Then I ask the Lord to give me a sign, to send me anything no matter how small so I would know He still loves me and will always encourage me so I don’t give up.

So what’s in a sign or rather what does a sign look like?  Well it could be very small like a hug or call from a friend, an e-mail from someone you haven’t heard from in a while. It could be a little more significant like an amazing big blue sky with silky clouds or a sweet flower in your garden. It could be all-encompassing like a profound verse in the bible or special quote which speaks to you; it could be that gentle peace in your heart which you can’t explain because what you are going through is just so overwhelming, yet you know that everything’s going to turn out all right – somehow.

These are just a few of the signs God sends for us (including a song by DMX with serious lyrics) … we just have to be still and look for them. You might even find one with your name on it like I did 🙂

Whatever you are going through right now may mean this IS your season but let’s always think peace in the storm and in the meantime lets take a breath, come up for air and here’s DMX.  Really really listen to the words and if you feel lost, ask the Lord to give you a sign; He will send it.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV)

Excerpt: “I’m gonna make it wrong or right, Make it through the darkest night, When the morning comes you’ll see, All I have is God in me, Lord give me a sign!”

  1. Lord, I need Your guidance. You know how I have been dealing with a situation involving someone I love. I have mixed feelings. I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing. Lord, please give me a sign, give me some direction, let me know if I am doing the right thing or not.

  6. Feeling a little depressed. I moved to another state and have been very depressed lately. It has been 9 years since I left but things are not getting better. My heart feels so heavy right now. I need a change.

    • Dear Jackie, sorry to hear that you are depressed but if you do believe that you need a change what exactly would that change be? In the end though God is always with is especially on those days when it looks as though we are all alone. Chin up! You’ve got a friend over here!

    • Abusive relationships are not healthy or safe! Give the situation to God but please get help from a close friend or member of your family. Will be lifting you up in prayer and asking God to protect you always. Hugs from my heart to yours and thanks for visiting; may this little contribution to the blogosphere give you hope.

I am sick of my husband’s abusive language .
He is a nice man but his language is very bad most of the time.I left my permanent job to be with him for the sake of my son. It’s a new country. Now I am fed up of being compared and abused for not having a job.Ohh God show me the way Should I go back to my country or stay with my husband.

    • Dear Urvashi, God will indeed show you the way but in the meantime please do whatever you can to secure your emotional safety and well-being. I think we take emotional abuse for granted especially since it is not as obvious as physical/domestic abuse in terms of scars yet it is very very real. You also have to think of your son. I will be praying for you and your family while hoping that 2017 will be even more than you could possibly ever wish it to be. In the meantime please keep well; hugs 🙂

  9. Many years ago I asked God if I had sins to pay for, let me do so in this earthly life. I don’t want to have to pay for anything when I get to Heaven. I want every crown I can get. He was listening. My God is an awesome God. Riley Bennett Bass 64 yrs. old. It won’t be long now and I can go Home.

    • I so loved this comment! I can entirely relate to every single thought expressed here and like you, I want every crown I can get … but some days it is hard and there are people who try to make sure that I will not see Jesus; I am positive there are none of these in your area as there are all here by me. It was truly a pleasure reading your words Riley. Keep the faith and may God’s favour continue to be with you always.

  10. I was getting ready to say I found your site by accident tonight, as this is the first time I have been here. However, I know in actuality, I am here because the Lord led me here! I just had to tell you that I am so mesmerized by your writings; you are such a beautiful writer, your words pull me right in. I read an article of yours a few moments ago on Spiritual Warfare; so well put! Again, I just had to comment on how beautifully you write. God Bless and continue Blessing others…Rae

  14. God gave many signs to men like Moses and Elijah to confirm his word. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for seeking after a sign, but they were legalists with a fundamentalist extremism. Simply taking God at His word is often better than seeking after miracles or dazzling sensory experiences. “Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’” (John 20:29).

  16. I found this after a really rough day and I was asking God all day for a sign and I here I am. I started my day off asking God for something but I just need to thank the Lord for all that I have been blessed with and for showing me that he’s heading us.

  17. I received a sign recently and would like to share it. I was having a stressful and bad year. One morning I was by myself when I blurted out “Jesus I need to see you! I just need a sign that everything is going to be OK and that you do exist.” After I said that I went on my daily routines and forgot I even said those words. It was a Saturday and I was meeting a bunch of family members later that day for lunch. We decided on a restaurant and went to the restaurant with 3 car loads of family, kids etc. While in route my sister in law texts my wife as I was driving and asked if we could go to another restaurant rather than the one we were headed to. So we said OK. While at the restaurant (as I sat with my family members at a long table for 12 people) I noticed a group of four men being seated a few tables away. I said to my wife “I think those guys look familiar. I am not sure how I know them possibly through work”. But I was not 100% sure so I did not go over to say hi to them. By the end of the meal one of the guys came over to our table and looked directly at me and said hi and asked if we were enjoying our meal. I said to him you know you look familiar do I know you from somewhere? The guy said to me you may have seen me at the local church I speak at. He then said let me give you my card and pamphlet so if you and your family want to stop in you are more than welcome. On one of the cards he gave me it said “Jesus is the answer”. As he walked back to his table I remembered what I had asked earlier in the day and was at a loss for words. This is never happened to me before or since. I had never seen this man before but something told me that I might know him. The fact that he came up to our table and focused almost entirely on me rather than the 5 other adults and 6 kids was unusual and then to have him hand me a card that said “Jesus is the answer” was definitely a sign. It was an enlightening experience.
