Ordinary or Extra-ordinary?

Flowers growing in between rocks

Ever thought about it?  The difference between ordinary and extraordinary? It’s an interesting question and one that requires some thought before coming to an answer.

In the beginning …

For starters, I resist extraordinary most times preferring the tried and true.  I don’t take chances, risks or place bets on horses.  Taking the well-worn path is usually good for me … but I had to be honest with myself: isn’t ordinary boring? Isn’t it better to take the bull of life by the horns and ride it full speed ahead EXTRAORDINARILY??!!!

… I was ordinary

Ok, so I’m old and weary but excited about making a change. Even now as I write this I am pulling back while in the process of pushing forward.  And all this angst it’s thanks to Laura Hodges Poole over at A Word of Encouragement, a writer with a blog serving up a wonderful blend of encouragement, life support and tips for our life journey. Take her latest article in particular for example, entitled: Choosing the Extraordinary Path which starts with this quote:

“There are no extraordinary men… just extraordinary circumstances that ordinary men are forced to deal with.” ~William Halsey, fleet Admiral and South Pacific commander during World War II

She had my attention from the very beginning because I never looked at my life from this point of view at all, even when I struggled through my “D” days of divorce, death of a loved one and down-sizing. These things had all happened to other people so what made my situation out of the ordinary? Nothing.  I am sure there were others who felt as though they were going to die just as I did, or became totally shriveled up on the inside day after day like me, or desperately felt it was better to give up than carry on. Yup, totally ordinary – not so?  Except that after reading what Laura had to say, maybe (just maybe) I could have tried adopting an extraordinary attitude instead? Hmmmm …

Getting to extraordinary starts here

Here’s an excerpt from Laura:

“As I collected shells, I thought about how often we settle for ordinary because we’re too scared or too set in our ways to strive for the extraordinary. Or perhaps we believe, especially in some Christian circles, we don’t deserve better or only those blessed with extraordinary talents or calling should be in this realm. In doing so, we often get trapped by the ordinary day-to-day time wasters like television, social media, or games.”  Read more …

If you are like me, living a life full of ordinary, maybe now is the time to start to think ‘extraordinary’ and taking that leap into an awesome amazing future. The sky’s the limit and it can be done!

  1. wow – powerful – “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.”

Ordinary people believe only in the possible. Extraordinary people visualize not what is possible or probable, but rather what is impossible. And by visualizing the impossible, they begin to see it as possible”
