“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

It’s back-to-school for our children (well, for those not at the local University of the West Indies or attending an international university).  For most of us this usually means back-to getting up earlier on mornings, being stuck in traffic and maybe starting off our days with a little more dis-organization than normal as we say: “time to get up” and “time to get into the bath” and “stop dreaming and eat your breakfast” and “don’t forget your lunch” and “move a little faster please, you’re going to make me late for work” and “if I have to speak to you one more time you will see …”.

As we help our children get back on track and set some personal goals for the coming school year, let’s take the opportunity to look at setting a few objectives for ourselves as well. What works even better is if you agree to teamwork i.e. you and your children work as each other’s buddies in monitoring the progress (or lack thereof) being made towards the goals set. You can even schedule a pow-wow meeting every other weekend or so to see where you are and if necessary reward any objectives met with small but meaningful celebratory events.

A word of warning to us as adults however: let us not make the exercise more painful than it needs to be! Our children do not need 20 goals and neither do we! This is just one way of simply training our children in the way that they should go as we prepare them for life on their own BUT always bear in mind that sometimes our plans may not be in line with God’s plans and it’s at times like those that we will need to let go and take a step back while God works His amazing magic in our lives. Enough said.

Does the above sound do-able? Hope so, but if you need a little motivation to help you along the way, take a look at the poem below by William Arthur Ward entitled: Sing… Dance…Climb – and have a great Monday!

PS: We’d love to hear from you so please take a moment to share and let us know how you plan to work with your kids in creating their goals for the coming school year.

Sing… Dance… Climb…

By William Arthur Ward

“Sing a new song; dance a new step; take a new path.

Think a new thought; accept a new responsibility; memorize a new poem.

Try a new recipe; plan a new adventure; entertain a new idea.

Learn a new language; blaze a new trail; enjoy a new experience.

Make a new friend; read a new book; see a new movie.

Climb a new hill; scale a new mountain; launch a new career.

Find a new purpose; fill a new need; light a new lamp.

Exercise a new strength; grasp a new truth; practice a new awareness.

Add a new dimension; encourage a new growth; affirm a new beginning.

Discover a new answer; envision a new image; conceive a new system.

Dream a new dream; chart a new course; build a new life.

Open a new door; explore a new possibility; capture a new vision.

Start a new chapter; seek a new challenge; express a new confidence.

Write a new plan; turn a new page; follow a new direction.

Watch a new program; be a new person; radiate a new enthusiasm.”
