Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Isaiah 40:28-29 (NIV)
I remember it as if it were yesterday. My application to become a new home owner had been unexpectedly and somewhat abruptly approved at the beginning of the week. This left me, the perfect ‘always-in-control-of-a-life-event-planner’ totally caught off guard. I was forced to terminate my lease prematurely, assign my work to a team member and bring forward vacation time to facilitate moving … in addition to all of the other related tasks involved.
Even though I wasn’t overjoyed at all of the inconvenience I was seemingly being made to suffer, I did find time to marvel at the uncharacteristic efficiency of the financial and legal institutions involved. For days I balked at what I considered to be terribly poor timing (after all, I was set to move in another 12 months not in seven days!), but that was only until the company I worked for suddenly went into receivership – on the Friday of that very same week! My life certainly looked a whole lot different, and I will never forget how relieved I was that everything had been finalized prior to the big question mark which subsequently hung over my once secure employment status. Who cared about inconveniences now? Certainly not me!
Of course, there have been other experiences of a similar nature which just cannot be humanly explained away e.g. a vehicular accident where the driver and/or passengers walk away from a wreck which looks as though everyone in it must surely have died, or someone totally recovering from a terminal illness without a trace of the disease anywhere in their body.
What about the smaller miracles we experience on a day to day basis when life just seems to ‘fall into place’? It could be the meeting you are unprepared for that is unexpectedly cancelled, green traffic lights when you are pressed for time, a word or prayer that hits the spot when needed most, or something as insignificant as a friend inviting you to lunch when there is not a dime to be found in your purse .
So what is my point? My point is that God is faithful to those who love and serve Him. Yes, He may treat you like He did Job and allow you to feel some serious ‘fire’ in your life but you can be sure He will also be the first fire fighter to jump off the fire truck with the biggest water hose.
With God there are no coincidences, only faith – His in us, as well as ours in Him. And so I encourage you to call on El Olam: the everlasting or eternal God, the God who has no beginning and no end, the God whose plans to give you a future filled with hope stand firm, the God whose love endures forever and ever; Amen.
