And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Revelation 21:3-5 (NIV)

I have decided. Sometimes you just have to forego reading the newspaper or watching the news on television. It’s emotionally nerve-racking to continuously feed your mind with suicides, murders, domestic violence incidents, chemical warfare, terrorist acts and politicians whose stories keep changing.

Admittedly, it is useful to acknowledge the world we are living in today. Only a silly unintelligent person would pretend all is well at home or abroad. People are homeless and children are starving in our own back yards as well as globally. Our first response can be to ask: “When will it all end?” or “When will things get better?”

But no-one truly knows the answers. Maybe because the real question could be: “What can I do to make it better?” or “What contribution can I actively make, no matter how small, so that this space I am in becomes a better one?”

Even if you find yourself too weary or overwhelmed to ask a question or come up with an answer, there is still something you can do. You can hold on to the promise of God which He offers to us in the verses above. Look closely at the words, because He guarantees “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” God is creating something new …even though it looks as though the old order of things will never go away.

I do not know what you are facing today. It could be the loss of a loved one, a job or a relationship; dealing with challenging situations or people at work; trying to get your son or daughter to understand why they shouldn’t stray from the straight and narrow path; stretching your little pay check to cover your big expenses; the list is endless. But that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead to a time where there is no mourning or crying or pain.

In the meantime let’s find a way to patiently wait on the Lord as He creates a new thing in our lives, as well as see how many others we can help along the way while we wait. It can be done.

Have a great week!
