Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Teenagers already know everything. That’s just how it is. They usually find it hard to believe anything their parents tell them, so it’s best to let someone else do so. Over the years I’ve tried my best to share my life experiences with my 16 year old son. Sometimes he pays attention; most times it’s like he’s in a far away land where my words do not reach him.
But I press on, because I am his parent and that is what parents do for their children. We love them right where they are until they meet us where we are – no matter how long it takes.
And in the meantime, we do things like this: find a few pertinent words, written by someone other than ourselves, which say exactly what we want to say from our heart, and in a quiet non-threatening way.
Dedicating this message to my son is the best birthday gift I can give to myself … even though it’s for him. Hope he likes it. And happy birthday to me! Hoping for a good one.
