Wishing you a few mistakes for 2014

Oops! Road Sign

I am ambivalent about making mistakes.  If it’s a really big one I hate the embarrassment or feeling of inadequacy left behind.  If it’s an innocent harmless one I can easily laugh at my dumb self and move along smartly.  The ones which I make as a result of an erroneous assumption or because I didn’t take the time to check over my work/thinking are those that bother me the most especially since I tend to be a perfectionist.

I have sent e-mails out to the wrong people, written incorrect dates on cheques, wrongly accused my son of doing things he didn’t do and assumed the worst about the antagonists in my life on more than one occasion – and that’s just for starters.

Yup, ‘boo boo’ land is definitely not my favourite place yet some days I find myself spending a lot of time there.  Maybe that’s why I find this ‘thought’ below so very interesting … and why I am prepared to continue making a mistake or two in 2014.  What about you?

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
