You may think this is a strange prayer, but isn’t it appropriate?  It’s Christmas time, and there is SOOOO much to be done yet so little time to do it in.

You sit at your desk and look at the things left over from last week’s To Do List.  You hold your head in your hands as you add the ‘leftovers’ to this week’s list, all the while trying to work out how you will multiply the finite hours in your day.  There isn’t even any time left for the ‘unexpected/urgent must-be-done-now-or-else’ tasks that always pop up.  How can you possibly do it all and remain sane?  How will you manage?  It seems so hopeless; so completely unachievable.

As you try to keep it together during the next few weeks of managing your career along with house cleaning, re-decorating and baking, remember that the devil’s math is meant to confuse and frustrate us on all levels.  He will add more and more stuff to our day so we will have less and less time for God, our families and of course ourselves.  Don’t let him win! We know that we can do it all because our help cometh from the Lord – who made heaven and earth!  Isn’t an e-mail, project report, team meeting, church concert or planning a family lunch for 50 people that much easier than creating an entire universe and its inhabitants?  Indeed yes!

So the plan for December is this: to lift our eyes up to heaven and reflect on psalm 121 while keeping our prayers sweet and simple – because God will answer us!

“Dear God, I love you and need you, especially during this ‘silly’ season when way too much emphasis is placed on gift giving and not enough on acknowledging the reason for the season: your precious son Jesus Christ.  Look into my heart and help me to remember those who may not have as much I do, and please watch over us all, not only at Christmas but all year through.  This I ask in Jesus’ loving name, Amen.”

Verse for Reflection

Psalm 121 (KJV)

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.   He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.  Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.  The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.  The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.  The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
